Through Deep Waters

Through Deep Waters

When I’m feeling happy and everything in my life is going smoothly, I consider myself to have a strong faith in the Lord. I trust in Him to take care of me, to watch over and protect me … and while that’s a pleasant thing to do, I’ve realized something.

My faith cannot accurately be measured during the good times.

It is only when He’s leading me through the dark, troubling waters of difficulties that I see how shallow, weak, and inconsistent my trust really is.

But no matter how unfaithful I am, whether I jump into the waters to meet Him, or I’m up on the shore, biting my lip and grinding my heel into the sand, He remains faithful; He will never change. He cannot change, He never has, and He never will.

{“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” – Hebrews 13:8}

He is eternally righteous, holy, and loving, and through each trial that He carries me through, I am always left marveling at the riches of His grace and the love that He has for me and everyone else on earth.

In my weakest moments, I can see His strength. Not on the days when I’m very happy; it is then that I experience His joy. It’s only when I am weak, virtually broken before His feet, that I can see how strong He is.

My daily goal is to consistently come to know Him more … to be able to more confidently trust in the One Who has loved me for all of eternity. Even though I will never fully understand Him or His ways, it is something that I daily strive after, and during those prayers and quiet times, He has taught my heart so much.

Even though hard times are no fun to go through, they bring us closer to Him. They give us a better understanding of His eternal provision and care, and from that perspective, I am very thankful for the difficulties I’ve gone through and am currently experiencing.

When we are weak, He is strong. What is something that the Lord has carried YOU through?

  1. It’s sobering when we really see our faith (or lack thereof) during difficult times. I frequently pray for Him to strengthen my faith and reliance on Him so that the problems and struggles I face are able to have the effect that He intends. *sigh* It is not easy, but thankfully He is able, when I am not. πŸ™‚
    Also, I loved the analogy of water depth, Maggie!

    1. Amen ❀️ His strength never fails. πŸ™‚ Thank you, I love it, too! Ever since I listened to ‘My Jesus’ by Leeland, I’ve loved analogies involving water. πŸ™‚

  2. :):):):):):) I just don’t have the words to describe what I feel right now. Everybody is always loving the Lord when things are going their way but you are so right, It is “when we are broken at His feet that He is the strongest” He is our Father, and when something has us down He will fight for us to the death. Just like I would for my son, and your Mom and dad would for you πŸ™‚ But His Love, oh His Love is so immeasurable we can’t even comprehend it. This is why I love your blog Maggie. I am selfish about it.

    1. I am sooooo happy that you enjoyed this post, Margaret! ❀️ I loved getting to write it! And I think that the picture goes with it so well. πŸ™‚ I know that you love reading my Sunday posts, but I think you should know that I am honestly a bit jealous of your poetry skills! I’ve never been able to write nice poetry, but I can tell that’s something the Lord has blessed you with. ❀️ We write differently, but both gifts are from Him. πŸ™‚

    1. And thank you for reading. ❀️ It’s definitely easy to love the Lord when things are easy. Even when my heart is breaking, however, I find myself continuing to love Him, despite how hard that is. He helps me to stay focused on His provision when I don’t understand what I’m going through πŸ™‚

  6. Just the phrase “Deep Waters” flashes so many memories. Giving Mom her last hug on this earth, the Doctor saying (of my middle child upon birth) “uh oh…there’s a problem” , hearing “You don’t work here anymore” after 20 years. and knowing we could all fill in the blanks. Even when I have lost all faith and control; God has not given up on me. Good piece.

  7. There is wisdom in your words in this post. Thanks to you for sharing that wisdom. One of the expressions of deeper faith is the willingness to push out into deep water when we sense the Spirit of God leading to that decision. Daring to go forward with our God, to take the risk willingly in obedience to His prompting and for His glory alone is a sign of vitality and trust. It is what it means to love our God above ourselves, above all other loves, above even life itself. Thanks you for writing, Maggie.
